A bunch sprint was expected along the coastline this Thursday because of the entirely flat parcours of the second stage in the Belgium Tour, between Beveren and Knokke-Heist.
Many teams, including Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux, controlled the gap with the breakaway, which was caught with 18 kilometer to go.
Just after this moment, the Belgian team took the lead and enabled Quinten Hermans and Loïc Vliegen to obtain precious bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints of the ‘Golden Kilometer’.
The teammates of Gerben Thijssen then launched the young sprinter who crossed the line in the top ten. At the end of this second stage, Hermans and Vliegen are now sixth and ninth respectively.
